Coventry aims for sanctuary status

25 October 2008
Over one hundred people attended the very successful public meeting held on 25 September 2008 to launch Coventry's campaign to become a City of Sanctuary. People came from all parts of Coventry's communities, including newly arrived and established residents, representation from a variety of churches through to people working for public sector agencies including health and housing.

Following inspiring talks by Coventry's Lord Mayor, Councillor Andy Machet and Craig Barnett from the national City of Sanctuary group, over twenty people agreed to become involved in a taskgroup which will ensure that positive action takes place to make Coventry a more welcoming city for vulnerable people.

Coventry Group Launches on 25th September

Coventry is working towards achieving City of Sanctuary status. For many years Coventry has offered refuge to people whose lives were in danger in their own countries. Many have lost their homes and families, but they have brought new kills, music, food, ideas - contributing to our vibrant and diverse community.

We want to build on the positive things that go on already in the city by encouraging as many people and organisations as possible to consider how we can make Coventry more welcoming to people seeking sanctuary and to vulnerable migrants.
