'London Citizen of Sanctuary' Awards Ceremony, June 2009

Earlier this year London City of Sanctuary marked Refugee Week 2009 by hosting it's first 'London Citizens of Sanctuary' Awards Ceremony. Awards were presented to 3 exceptional Londoners who embody the spirit and commitment to welcoming refugees which the City of Sanctuary movement is seeking to promote. The event followed a special performance of the Asylum Dialogues by Actors for Human Rights at the New Players Theatre on Sunday 21st of June.

The event was a huge success and enjoyed a great turnout.

The three recipients were:

Juliet Stevenson – as well as being one of Britain’s most esteemed actresses, Juliet has been a long-standing campaigner for the rights of those seeking sanctuary in the UK, both directly and through her work as an actor. Most recently, she worked with Women for Refugee Women to produce and perform in Motherland at the Young Vic, which told the true stories of women and children locked up in the UK's immigration detention centres.

Neil Gerrard MP for his work as a leading parliamentary champion on refugee and asylum issues. As a constituency MP, Neil has also devoted himself to helping new migrants in London and in increasing understanding between communities

Peter Tatchell, Human Rights Activist – for over 20 years of work supporting refugees both personally and through his campaigning to improve conditions and treatment of those genuinely seeking refuge in this country.

'Refugees are Welcome Here' Summary and Photos

On Saturday 20 June 2009 the newly formed London City of Sanctuary
group showed that refugees are important and valued citizens of the
capital by unfurling a ‘Refugees Welcome Here’ banner at over 50 iconic
sites. 

In 10 hours, during a single day, the group unfurled its banner at
theatres, government departments, galleries, hotels, places of worship
and tourist sites, from Chelsea Football Club in the West to Brick
Lanein the East, from the British Library in North London to the London
Eye on the South Bank.  

The action took place in Refugee Week as part of the ‘Simple Acts’ campaign, and was a huge success.

Refugees Welcome Across the Capital - Press Release

taking place this Sunday 21st June. The first three recipients of this
award will be Juliet Stevenson, Neil Gerrard MP and Peter Tatchell. 

London City of Sanctuary Launched

The London Group held its inaugural launch event at St Martins' in the Field on November the 12th 2008.

The event was a huge success, and those attending heard talks from Craig Barnett, Inderjit Bhogal, Peter Tatchell and Neil Gerard MP on the exciting plans to make London an Olympic City of Sanctuary.

The London movement is in its very early stages, and does not as yet resemble any formal grouping. We need your help and involvement to take this campaign forward and play a part in its development.
