These are the notes from the two subgroups at the 21 June Workshop on the four Questions posed for discussion.
1. What can City of Sanctuary achieve to add to what we have already?
Group 1:- Helping asylum seekers and refugees to find their voice.- Giving a ‘mark' for good work - a ‘brand'.- Looking out to wider organizations- Challenging perceptions - positive image- Awareness raising- Inviting people into organizations [cf. DPIA, SBASSG plans for giving talks]- Human stories and human meeting- Using film - cf. ‘parenting' project- Linking City of Sanctuary to "Community Cohesion" and "Regeneration" strategies- Linking to Single Equalities policy- Providing information - realities - what's going on, how people can help;
information about full range of needs, actions, campaigns- Reclaiming vision of human rights
Group 2:- Council offers many services, already has top level meetings between different directorates; could add training and awareness raising e.g. for education welfare officers, health service workers, police, teachers- Need resources for such workers to include asylum seekers and refugees fully- Home-school links for children and families- More shops to take vouchers (work on the housing providers to arrange this)- Work with schools to promote inclusion
2 What might different groups (local? interest groups?) do?
Group 1:- Awareness raising - amongst members/ staff. Staff training. Through forums.- Improve accessibility - approach, looking beyond boundary, signposting- Linking to equality policies, staff development.- Include Forums.- Criteria for organizations to meet:
o How to turn a pledge into reality?o What sort of pledge?
- Function of City of Sanctuary -to provide a framework, together with information on what others have done elsewhere, and ask for an Action Plan.
Group 2:- COMMUNICATE!
3 What might happen at a city level? How can ‘City of Sanctuary' help? What might the ‘Swansea City of Sanctuary' group itself do?
Both groups plus some additional suggestions received separately:- Sign up likely organizations.- Provide a logo (stickers, notices "We welcome asylum seekers and refugees")- Public presentation- Annual civic reception- Mas Carnival - theme- Directory of welcoming organizations and services; brochure - what's going to happen- Get businesses on board- Evening Post (brochure distribution) & other media- Website- Some specific projects (e.g. DACE follow-up to parenting project; National Waterfront Museum Heritage Lottery bid for project bringing together elderly people or young people from local and international backgrounds to work on their personal backgrounds.)- A big event next year in the Bronwyn Hall (what big name should ‘top the bill?)
